"Tops" and "bottoms" explained
There is a little of confusion when it comes to the terms tops and bottoms.this confusion is often times brought on by the media, books, and cultural differences.
The term "top" or "bottom" may simply be used to designate who is doing - or receiving - an activity.
In BDSM, a "top" is the person doing something to someone else, and a "bottom" is the person receiving that act. No power exchange is required for these acts.
For example, a masochist may be interested in giving or receiving some kind of stimulation but may not be interested in giving up control, a "bottom "may chose not to give up power and may control exactly how, under what circumstances, and to what degree he or she receives some form of stimulation. Where as a "top" may chose simply control the act he or she is doing.
The activities between a "Top" and "bottom" are negated beforehand to the satisfaction of all parties involved. At anytime these activities can be stopped.
"Tops" and "bottoms" don't always have to be in a relationship. The activities could be a one time thing or could extend through multiple sessions. Being in a relationship is not a requirement of "Tops" and "Bottoms".
